What You'll Experience
Captain Tyler will put you right on the structure where spring tautog are feeding most aggressively. Rocky reefs, boulder fields, and channel edges in Buzzards Bay — these are the spots where heavyweight blackfish stack up in the spring, and Tyler knows every one of them.
Spring is prime time for tautog. After a long winter, these fish move onto shallow structure to spawn and feed heavily, and the bite can be fast and furious when you're anchored on the right rocks. You'll be fishing with specialized tautog jigs tipped with live green crabs — one of the deadliest tautog baits there is — and Tyler will coach you through the subtle feel and technique needed to connect with these hard-mouthed, hard-fighting fish.
Tautog are also widely considered one of the best-eating fish in New England — firm, white, and delicious — and their fillets freeze exceptionally well. You'll have an excellent chance of going home with a bag full of premium table fare valued at over $100.
And if the crew limits out on tautog, Captain Tyler doesn't head home — he fires up the engines and takes you striper fishing. Spring stripers and spring tautog overlap perfectly in Buzzards Bay, so when the blackfish cooperate early, you could end up with two species in one morning. It's a rare bonus that makes these trips even more exciting.
