What You'll Experience
This is offshore fishing at its absolute finest. You'll leave Falmouth Harbor in the pre-dawn darkness and make the 100-mile run to the legendary Northeast Canyons—underwater geological formations that concentrate baitfish and attract the ocean's apex predators.
Over the next 36 hours, you'll experience multiple bite windows as you fish through day, night, and into the following day. The overnight format is what separates this from a standard trip—you'll be on the water during prime swordfish hours after dark, early morning bigeye tuna bites, and daytime opportunities for wahoo, mahi, yellowfin, bluefin, marlin and more.
The Captain Willy Advantage:
Captain Willy's decades of offshore experience means you're fishing with someone who knows these waters intimately. His extensive network throughout the offshore fleet keeps him connected to where fish are being caught in real-time. His background includes a BS in Environmental Science and Fisheries from Union College, plus charter and commercial fishing experience spanning Cape Cod, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, North Carolina, Florida, and the Bahamas.
The Machaca - Built for Offshore:
You'll fish aboard Machaca, a 36' BHM lobsterboat completely rebuilt in 2014 with a new 400hp Cummins engine. True lobsterboats are renowned for their stability and seaworthiness in offshore conditions—this is a serious fishing platform designed for the challenging waters 100 miles from shore. The boat is equipped with:
- Top-tier electronics for finding fish and navigating safely
- Grill, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker for meals
- Single burner gas stove for additional cooking
- Head (bathroom) facilities
- Comfortable sleeping bean bags and cabin arrangements for the overnight portion
Target Species:

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this trip suitable for beginners?
While this is an advanced offshore adventure, Captain Willy is an excellent teacher. If you're in reasonably good physical condition and comfortable spending extended time on the water, he'll ensure you're successful. That said, this is serious offshore fishing—long hours, physically demanding at times, and not for those prone to severe seasickness.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety is paramount. If conditions are unsafe for offshore travel, Captain Willy will do his best to reschedule to another available date. With 30+ years of offshore experience, Willy won't take unnecessary risks. If rescheduling is not possible, then you will receive a full refund.
Can I bring my own gear?
Captain Willy provides all necessary gear for those who prefer to use his equipment. With that said, if you have offshore-grade tackle you're comfortable with and want to use, bring it.
How rough is the ride 100 miles offshore?
The 36' BHM lobsterboat is purpose-built for offshore conditions and handles seas exceptionally well. That said, you're 100 miles from shore—there will be wave action. Most anglers find the Machaca remarkably stable and comfortable.
What about seasickness?
This is a long offshore trip. If you're prone to seasickness, take Dramamine or use Sea-Bands BEFORE departure. Once you're offshore, it's too late. Consider whether overnight offshore fishing is right for you—there's no turning back once you're 100 miles out.
Where do we sleep?
The Machaca has comfortable sleeping arrangements. Don't expect a luxury stateroom—this is a fishing boat—but you'll have a place to rest between bite windows. Most anglers choose to sleep in bean bags on deck, but there is also space down below in the cabin.
What's the fishing schedule?
Fishing happens around the clock with strategic breaks. You'll fish prime daytime hours for tuna, mahi, and wahoo, then transition to nighttime tactics for swordfish, with early morning bites often being the most productive. Captain Willy orchestrates the schedule based on conditions and bite windows.
How do we handle meals?
The boat has a grill, microwave, Keurig, and single burner stove. Most anglers bring pre-prepared food, sandwiches, and easy-to-heat items. Captain Willy will grill dinner and provide breakfast sandwiches. Once groups are finalized, Captain Willy can provide more specific guidance on meal planning. If you have any food allergies then please let us know beforehand.
What about cell phone service?
Willy has Starlink on his boat so you'll be able to connect to the internet. With that said we recommend planning to disconnect if you can—it's part of the offshore experience.

Gratuity Guidelines
Gratuity is customary but not included in the trip price. For overnight canyons trips with Captain Willy, industry standard is:
• If 3 anglers: $300 per person (given to Willy at end of trip)
• If 4 anglers: $225 per person (given to Willy at end of trip)
Adjust based on the quality of your experience, but these figures reflect appropriate compensation for a captain and first mate providing 36+ hours of expert guidance 100 miles offshore.
